We are
continually consulting with physical therapists, special educators and rehab
technology specialists. We value the knowledge, insight and experience you
provide to help guide us as we develop this breakthrough cycle and create
adaptations and accessories to meet individual needs. We also appreciate the
feedback you provide about the effectiveness of the Step 'n Go with your
clients.
Physical
therapists have noted that Step 'n Go provides a healthy dose of weight bearing,
low impact aerobic exercise. Emily's physical therapist, Joan Hitz, has
personally witnessed the physical benefits of regular Step 'n Go use for Emily
and would recommend its use to other PT’s. She says, "With any activity
it's important to reinforce and repeat the positive patterns of motion. A
properly adapted Step 'n Go has the potential to deliver an active range of
motion workout. Besides, when it's as much fun as a Step 'n Go, it's easy to
motivate the client."
Step 'n Go cycles have been an important addition to the adaptive
recreation program at the Lyndon Town School in Vermont.
Integration Specialist Susan Keefe wrote to tell us, "The ease with which
everyone has been able to master riding them has been ideal. They are being used
for motor skill development, behavioral reinforcers and just plain fun!"
Robert
Brentrup, PT, of Bismark, ND says, “We
use the Step ’n Go in an Acute Rehab setting and find it is both fun for the
patients and an effective modality for the treatment of balance dysfunction and
in promoting weight shifting. We especially like the dependent treadle system
and the Quickstand for use with deconditioned patients”.
Since
1994 we have been invited to bring Step 'n Go cycles to the Special Olympics in
Vermont and New Hampshire, where they have been enthusiastically received. I've
often heard the Olympians, after just a few moments of instructions, proudly
exclaim, "I can do this!" For many this may be their first experience
of being able to ride a bike by themselves, and the boost to their self-esteem
is evident.
