Step’
n
Go
solve one of the major problems you’ve faced helping clients experience
the fun, freedom and fitness of biking.
Step
’n Go eliminates the difficult circular pedaling motion and replaces it with a
much easier and more natural
up-and-down stepping
action, while
providing a healthy dose of weight
bearing, low impact, cardiovascular exercise that teaches weight shifting
and improves balance and self-esteem - all at the same time!
Step
’n Go Cycles are so much fun, they’ll forget they’re working towards
achieving their functional goals.
Step ‘n Go is Welcomed by Rehabilitation Professionals
From
the beginning, the individuals who wanted to try the Step 'n Go have introduced
it to their physical therapists or others involved in their care. Some of these
professionals were willing to let their clients try it as part of their
therapeutic program; others were skeptical. Now, it is not unusual for
professionals to introduce Step 'n Go to their clients and to look for ways to
include it in their programs.
We
have learned much about how Step 'n Go can benefit a diverse population of
riders from sales to several major clinics and institutions that serve children
and adults with orthopedic or neuromuscular conditions. Step 'n Go cycles
have been purchased for use in special educational programs at public schools
throughout the country. For children with cognitive or orthopedic disabilities
which are often accompanied by coordination and balance issues, Step 'n Go is
easy to learn to ride, balance and control.
As
you can tell from the stories you’ve read, the successful use of a Step 'n Go
is often a team effort. We work with the rider, his or her family, and their
physical therapist to create the perfect cycle to meet specific therapeutic
goals. Anecdotal evidence has indicated that proper use of a Step 'n Go can
increase muscle strength and coordination, and improve range of motion. Just as
important is the tremendous boost to the rider's self-esteem. The Step 'n Go can
be an important tool in meeting other therapy goals, such as improved trunk
control, proximal stabilization, weight shifting and motor control, all while in
an upright functional position. Research has also shown that the easier (and
more fun) an exercise is, the more likely the more likely the person will stay
with it.
Clinical
testing is continuing at the University of Vermont under the direction of Tony
Keller, Ph.D. of the Biomechanical Engineering Department. This testing includes
range of motion, muscle utilization and medical benefits (both major and minor)
of regular use of the Step 'n Go for riders with and without disabilities.
Preliminary research shows promising results. We welcome the opportunity to participate in
further studies with professionals involved in rehabilitation research. To
