“Hey,
Look Mom – I’m Biking!”
Matthew
has limited joint flexion caused by a
negative reaction to a vaccine he was given as an infant. Biking has not
been a part of growing up for Matt since he could not operate the pedals
of a typical bicycle, nor could he maintain his balance or squeeze a
brake handle.
When Matt first tried the Step 'n Go at our rental location in
Ocean City, NJ, it was only a few minutes before he was riding down the
sidewalk yelling “Hey, Look Mom – I’m Biking!”.
His parents, Chuck & Lisa, had found for the first time a bike Matt could ride.
The two up-front
wheels gave him the stability his dad had been searching for and the
upright riding position proved to be ideal for Matt's rigid upper torso
and fused neck.
It
is difficult for Matt to squeeze a brake lever, so we created a
specially designed brake handle so that Matt could operate the brake by
leaning on the padded brake bar with his forearm. Before Matt could
leave the driveway, he had to demonstrate to his dad that he could
operate the brake.
